Green cleaning the toilet
Many people wonder about the effectiveness of green cleaning products for the toilet. Arguably, cleaning the toilet is thought to be the dirtiest and the most dreaded task in the home. Therefore, we have long sought out the most toxic and corrosive chemicals available for this task. It is the house cleaning equivalent of nuclear warfare on germs. However, those who desire an eco-friendly approach, will be encouraged and enlightened by this article. No area transforms so drastically as a dirty toilet. Once it has been properly cleaned, the porcelain bowl will sparkle and shine.
Green cleaning tools
We cannot stress the importance of buying a high-quality toilet brush. The brush should offer the ability to reach under the rim, and deep inside the bowl passage. Choose a brush that has a self-containing base in which to rest, when it is not in use. Your toilet brush should always be stored close at hand, but stored remembering that it is the most germ laden device in your home.
Using green cleansers
At least once a week, the inside of the bowl should be thoroughly scrubbed. You will need to purchase eco-friendly toilet bowl cleaners, or you can rely on 3 things that you most likely already have at home.
- Eco-friendly dishwashing detergent
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Pickling or distilled vinegar
It is important to disinfect the brush between uses. This is achieved by spraying it with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Pickling vinegar is significantly more concentrated than regular white vinegar. You may also choose to use acetic vinegar that can be found in the eco-friendly cleaning supplies section of your grocery store. Be VERY CAREFUL with the acetic vinegar. Be sure to wear gloves, and be careful not to splash it on your skin.
Green cleaning the toilet
To start out:
- liberally spray the bowl, sides, and tank with vinegar or a vinegar/peroxide mixture
- let sit for a few minutes
- wipe dry with a clean, dry rag
Be mindful not to cross-contaminate surfaces by using the rag for anything other than the toilet. Please remember that if you have a varnished wooden seat and lid, the vinegar can etch the finish. Never let the vinegar sit for a long period after spraying.
