Deep cleaning stainless steel

Do you need deep cleaning for stainless steel surfaces that have seemed to have lost its luster, or just never seems to stay clean? In the past two decades, ever increasing numbers of homeowners have discovered what restaurateurs already knew, that stainless steel was an excellent surface. Stainless steel counters and appliances are not only beautiful, they provide a clean surface that resists corrosion and rust. If the finish is high quality, stainless steel responds well to cleaning, as long as certain rules are followed. You may be surprised to learn that there are actually different levels of cleaning for stainless steel. You start with basic cleaning, and work your way up as needed. Consider the following courses of action for keeping your stainless looking new and shiny.

Basic deep cleaning

Basic deep cleaning is the least risky and most affordable method for routine cleaning of stainless steel surfaces. This is accomplished by using warm water and a soft cloth. You may find it hard to believe, but plain water works to clean stainless in most situations. Dry the surface with a soft towel or microfiber cloth to prevent water spotting. Wiping with a dry towel is crucial because this removes minerals in the water that can leave spots on stainless steel. Microfiber cleaning cloths are probably your best option because they are so absorbent.

Mild detergent cleaning

If you need to loosen hardened particles that are stuck to the surface, a mild detergent and warm water will do a great job without etching or scratching your stainless steel. Do not overdo it with the detergent, only a drop or two of regular dishwashing liquid in warm water is all you need to get tougher dirt off of stainless steel surfaces. You can either mix the solution in a small sink of warm water, or you can simply add a drop of dish soap on a cloth. Add warm water to the cloth, and rub the dirty area with circular motion. Make sure that you thoroughly rinse and dry the surface to prevent staining and spotting.

Glass cleaner for fingerprints

Homeowners say that fingerprints are the number one problem when it comes to stainless steel surfaces. Fingerprints can easily be removed by using a glass cleaner or household ammonia. Spray the cleaner on a microfiber cloth; and wipe the stainless steel gently in a circular motion to remove the finger prints. Repeat as necessary, then rinse the surface thoroughly, and towel dry.

Stainless steel cleaner and polish

Sometimes stainless steel can become marred by stains or scratches. Lower grade stainless surfaces can or will lose its luster over time. In such cases, you will need to polish your stainless steel. There are numerous stainless steel cleaners and polishes that can help minimize scratching and remove stains. Read the directions on the product, and it is very important that you first test the cleaner in an inconspicuous spot.
