The top rack is usually reserved for glasses and plastic containers. In fact, you should place all heat sensitive items on the top rack in order to avoid exposing them to the heating element. Using the silverware basket
Depending upon the age of your dishwasher, your silverware basket will be located in the door, or on the bottom rack. Just understand that the silverware basket is always positioned to receive the full force of the water jets. Therefore, you need to make sure that dishes or pan do not cover or block the basket. In order to avoid injury, sharp knives should be loaded with the pointed end down. It makes no difference if other utensils are up or down, as long as they are not stuck together in a way that will prevent water spray to reach them.
