Popularity of stainless steel sinks

House cleaning professionals will tell you that stainless steel is obviously one of the most popular materials for kitchen sinks. This is because stainless steel is recognized by architects and designers to be extremely durable while offering a wide range of affordable options. Stainless steel sinks are considered maintenance-free because in nearly every situation they are impervious to corrosion or rust. Cleaning the sink is virtually the only activity necessary to provide proper care. Even when normal wear and tear creates scratches on the surface, they tend to blend into the overall patina over time.

Cleaning your stainless sink

Cleaning a stainless steel sink is very simple, start with a soapy dishwater solution and clean your sink with a soft cloth. Ammonia-based cleaners also work well. Ideally, cleaning the sink should be done after each meal has been prepared. After washing the surface, rinse the sink thoroughly and pat dry with a soft towel to avoid unnecessary scratches and to eliminate water spots.

Avoid any type of abrasives

As we mentioned above, light scratches are a normal part of stainless steel sink use. As time goes by, the scratches will give your sink character and its own unique look. However, you should never use any type of abrasive cleaning tools or steel wool to clean a stainless steel sink. This could lead to deep scratches that may need professional repair. It is also important that you do not use your sink as a cutting board. Knives that are harder than the sink will leave deep scratches in the surface, which can permanently scar or damage and sink exterior.

Disinfecting your sink

It is important that after cleaning your sink, you apply a disinfectant to kill germs in and around the sink. Fill the sink one to two inches of a 50/50 mix of water and bleach. Wipe down all surfaces and allow the solution to sit for approximately 15 minutes. Then you can drain the sink and rinse the sides and top of the basin with clean water, and then dab the sink dry with a soft towel. Be particularly careful to rinse away all traces of the bleach solution. Bleach can spot or discolor stainless steel if left on too long. Be sure that you always wear rubber gloves when disinfecting the sink with bleach.
