Like countless others in Charlotte, I am preparing to deep clean my home for the holidays. Two things are sure as we are in the final stretch of the grandest time of the year: There will be some gifts that we never saw coming, and there will be guests that we never expected to visit. First of all, if you are like me, you really want the home to be sparkling when you bring out the Christmas decorations. Your home could also use a boost before the little ones are out of school. It’s also important to put your best foot forward for guests and relatives who drop in for a few days. The reality is that you probably will not be able to do all the cleaning you would like to get done in the next few weeks. Walk through your home and try to look at it as a guest. Think about what your guests will see. Make sure that these areas are uncluttered and free of cobwebs. Clean marks and smudges off the walls, especially around light switches and in the ceiling globes.

While you are working your way through the home, establish some ground rules to overcome the extra activity in the home if you have kids that are out of school. This will also alleviate the chance of being unprepared for unexpected guests. Before anyone engages in fun or outdoor activities, they must go down the following checklist:
- Wipe kitchen and bathroom counters
- Make sure that the dishwasher has been run and emptied
- Wash and put away laundry
- Make the beds
- Put away toys and homework
Assign a family member to focus on tasks like dusting photographs and wiping finger prints off furniture. You will find it much easier to keep your home looking clean for the holidays.
