Mold in your home
Mold is a serious health risk for any home, and many homeowners are unaware that green cleaning products can be just as effective as common chemical products that come with their own health risks. In our quest to rid our homes of dangerous molds, mildews, and other bacteria, we have come up with remedies that can be just as harmful, even when they are used properly. This is why so many people have decided to “go green” when it comes to cleaning their homes.
Mildew is apparently visible in most cases, but mold may be growing in your home and you don’t realize it because mold forms and thrives in dark, warm, humid places. Your kitchen, bathroom, attic, and basement are the places that are most at risk for mold and bacteria growth because they are in constant contact with moisture. Under ideal conditions, mold can grow within 24-48 hours. Untreated mold infestation can cause respiratory illnesses and allergic reactions for you and your family. This means that it is important to kill mold as soon as it is discovered. Consider the following green cleaning solutions for eliminating mold:
Baking soda
Many people are surprised to discover that baking soda can be used to kill mold in your home. In addition to being safe to use around your family and pets, baking soda works two ways; first, by killing mold, and it also absorbs moisture to help keep mold away. To kill mold with baking soda: add one-fourth of a tablespoon of baking soda to a spray bottle that is filled with water. Shake the solution until it has dissolved. Spray the moldy area with the baking soda solution, then use a sponge or scrub brush to remove the mold from the surface. The next step is to rinse the surface with water to ensure removal of any residual mold. Finally, spray the area again and let the solution dry on the surface. This should kill any left-mold that was missed, and will prevent the mold from returning.
Vinegar
Vinegar is so popular as a green cleaner because it is in effect, a mild acid which kills almost every type of mold species. Used with baking soda, you provide a powerful combination that will get rid of just about every know type of mold. To kill mold, pour undiluted white distilled vinegar into a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar onto the moldy surface, and then let the solution sit for an hour. Finally, wipe or rinse the area with clean water, and allow the surface to dry. Most people do not care for the smell of vinegar, but it will dissipate within a few hours.
Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide should be in every home. It is inexpensive, and is found in almost any drug store or grocery store. Hydrogen peroxide is a multipurpose anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial solution. It immediately and effectively kills mold in the kitchen, bathroom, floors, and walls. To kill molds, pour 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle. Spray the solution directly on the moldy surface and leave it to sit for 10 minutes. Scrub the infected area in order to remove mold and mold stains. Wipe the surface down, and let it dry.
