The job that’s never done

One of the never-ending chores of seasonal house cleaning services, regardless of the time of year, is trying to maintain a dust free home. The removal of dust is one of the most effective ways of keeping your family healthy. Dust surprisingly more complicated than a collection of lint on the surface. Dust is an ever present scourge of particles that are carried in the air, and is found on every surface in our homes. It is a health concern because we breathe it all the time, and it can consist of up to as many as 5000 different particles of organic material such as skin, hair, pollen, mold, wood, fabric fibers, insect parts, paper fibers, and dust mites. The average person’s immune system can tolerate reasonable levels of dust. However, household dust is also comprised of a wide variety of chemical pollutants. We want to offer some helpful dusting tips that can help keep your family safe and healthy:

  1. Dust from top to bottom

Dust is carried to the highest places in your home and falls from top to bottom. Systematically, you should dust the highest items such as ceiling fans and ledges, then work your way down to the lowest. Dust from wall to wall in one direction, working in a clockwise direction until you have gone through all four corners. Finishing up by dusting the baseboards, and then vacuum as necessary.

  1. Use microfiber mops and cloths

Microfiber mops and cloths are versatile and they can be used either wet or dry. Microfiber is also an effective way to wipe the dust without causing it to fly into the air. A feather duster will only spread the dust from one surface to another. The most effective way to remove dust is to use lamb’s wool dusters, because the lanolin in the sheep’s wool will cause the dust to stick to the duster rather than flying around

  1. Dust the heating and cooling vents

The vents that direct air from your heating and air conditioning units are one of the greatest dust magnets in your home. This includes cold air return vents. Be sure to regularly vacuum or clean them. If you overlook the vents, the air blowing through them will spread dust throughout your home. Applying a coat of car wax on your vents to help keep them dust free. This also is effective for ceiling fans.

  1. Dust on your mattress

Every thirty to sixty days, it is advised that you sprinkle some baking soda over your mattress, let it sit for an hour or so, and then vacuum it up with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. This will freshen and deodorize the mattress, while eliminating dust mites.
