Unwanted houseguests
Summer is almost over, just a little bit of house cleaning, and you can invite guests over for a Labor Day weekend get together. Unfortunately, the long spell of warm weather also means that there will be uninvited guests at your weekend bash… No, we are not referring to an obnoxious neighbor; we are talking about houseflies. In fact, you can expect a whole crowd of these unwanted guests. They start out in the back yard with the first whiff of barbeque, and they will work their way into the house the moment you crack your windows or open a door. We want to offer you some tips Flies are germ carrying, annoying, and seemingly impossible to get rid of without spraying insecticide all over your home and backyard.
Make scents to get rid of flies
Two things you never want around your outdoor cookout is flies (or insects in general) and poisonous chemicals. We want to pass on some eco-friendly tips that will keep the flies to a minimum, if not away all together. The best part is that you can keep the flies away without wiping out a host of “friendly” insects or small animals. You can also forget about dealing with sticky, disgusting tapes or worrying about the toddlers playing with a fly swatter. Just like mosquitoes and ants, flies are repelled by certain scents. The icing on the cake is that these scents will have your home smelling wonderfully pleasant. Consider the following:
Lavender
I cannot think of anyone I know that does not enjoy the scent of lavender. Yet, houseflies absolutely hate it. It is a little too early to plant lavender outside; putting a lavender bouquet on the picnic table, or a few strategically placed lavender oil diffusers can keep the flies away and keep your home smelling great.
Basil
Basil is an extremely versatile herb that grows well in gardens, flowerbeds, or in planters. Plant some basil near the entryways to your home to prevent flies from entering the house. Potted plants on the porch or deck will also keep the flies away when you are outside.
Cloves and citrus
Not surprisingly, some mosquito repellants contain orange or lemon extracts. Combined with the scent of cloves, you can give the flies a 1-2 punch that will have your home smelling pleasant for weeks. Simply poke 20 to 25 whole cloves into a ripe orange, or any type of citrus fruit. Place it on a plate and the flies will disappear. You can also stick cloves in a ripe apple.
Pine oil
Pine oil is a very effective repellant for houseflies. Sprinkle a few drops in a small saucer or on a piece of gauze, and watch the flies fly away.
