Dust in your home
One of the never ending chores of house cleaning is trying to maintain a somewhat dust free home. Dusting should be considered an important part of keeping your family healthy. Dust is an ever present scourge of small to microscopic particles, and is found on every surface in our homes. Dust can be made up of up to as many as 5000 different particles of natural material such as skin, hair, pollen, mold, wood, fabric fibers, insect parts, paper fibers, and dust mites. The average person has an immune system that can tolerate reasonable levels of dust; however, household dust is also comprised of by a wide variety of chemical pollutants. Consider the following dusting tips to help keep your family safer and healthier:
Dust the house in a way that makes sense
Dust settles in the highest places in your home and falls from top to bottom. Systematically start with the highest items such as ceiling fans and ledges, then work your way down to the lowest. Dust from wall to wall, working in a clockwise direction until you have gone through all four corners, finishing up with the baseboards, then vacuum as appropriate.
Work with microfiber mops and cloths
Microfiber mops and cloths can be used either wet or dry. Microfiber is an effective way to capture dust without causing it to fly into the air. A feather duster might look great, but it only spreads the dust from one surface to another. Consider the use of lamb’s wool dusters if you prefer long reach dusting because the lanolin in the sheep’s wool will cause the dust to stick to the duster.
Pay special attention to heating vents
The vents on your heating and air conditioning ducts are one of the greatest dust magnets in your home; this includes cold air return vents. Be sure to regularly vacuum or clean them, or the air blowing through them will spread dust throughout your home. Apply a coat of car wax on your vents to help keep them dust free. This also works for ceiling fans.
Don’t forget your mattresses
Every sixty days it is advised that you sprinkle some baking soda over your mattress, let it sit for an hour or so, and then vacuum it up with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. This will remove dust mites and freshens up the mattress.
