The integral beauty of floors
Think back to when you first chose or designed your home. Can you remember how much time and energy you spent on choosing the perfect floor for the kitchens and bathrooms? How many different types of wood flooring did you consider? Floors are for more than just walking. They are an integral part of the function and décor or your home. This is also true for apartments as well. Because floors are one of the most prominent features in your home, it is important to keep them clean and in top condition. Today we will focus on cleaning and maintaining tile and hardwood flooring.
Ceramic or stone tile floors
Stone and tile floors are an extremely durable. They are a long-term investment that should be regularly cared for in order to preserve their appearance and value. It is no exaggeration when we say that a well cared for tile floor can last a lifetime. Proper care for a tile floor begins with keeping debris, sand, and dirt off of the floor. Once debris builds up, it acts as an abrasive to the floor surface. Regular vacuuming or sweeping with a dust mop will prevent surface scratching.
Clean ceramic-tile floors
Ceramic-tile floors can be easily cleaned, using nothing but warm water. Again, it is important to be sure to sweep or vacuum first, in order to remove any loose soil or grit. Never use a sponge mop for cleaning tile floors. Sponge mops will only drive the dirt and grit deep into the grout tracks. A micro-fiber mop works best. If you choose to get on your hands and knees and use a rag, be sure to wipe in a circular motion across the floor. If your grout is dirty, you should use a commercial grout cleaner and a brush.
Hardwood floors
The natural beauty of hardwood floors can be maintained with minimal effort. Regardless of the type of wood, hardwood floors should be cleaned regularly to keep dirt and grit from between the floor boards. Avoid using a wet mop because the excessive moisture can dull the finish. Sweep the floor regularly with a dust mop or a broom that has straws with exploded tips. If your machine has special hardwood floor attachments, you can also vacuum the floor. Never use a vacuum that has a beater bar. Wipe up spills immediately with a soft cloth.
Clean hardwood floors
For a cleaning solution, boil two teabags in a gallon of water. The tannic acid in tea leaves a beautiful shine on hardwood floors. Let the teabags steep in the boiling water for about five minutes. Pour the tea into a bucket and use a soft cloth to wipe the floor. Wring out the cloth until it is damp and not soaked. You want the wood floor to dry quickly. If there are any visible scratches, take a crayon that is the same color as the floor, and rub it on the scratch to fill the gap. Heat crayon filled scratch with a blow dryer, and then buff it with a soft cloth.
