Green cleaning with baking soda
Earlier, we have explained how vinegar is a solid staple for green house cleaning projects. There are many safe and green products that can be used for basic household cleaning. Next to vinegar, the most useful of these products is baking soda. You may wonder just exactly what baking soda is, and why is it harmless. To explain it simply, baking soda is a form of salt that is made by mixing sodium carbonate and carbon dioxide, two naturally occurring and very safe compounds.
Baking soda is so versatile that it is used in cooking, cleaning, medicine, personal hygiene, and even putting out grease fires. Most of us can remember how our mother placed that little half open box in the back of the refrigerator, and we probably thought that that was the primary use for baking soda. We want to offer you some of the top tricks and tips that will help you get the most out of baking soda for cleaning around your home.
Clean and deodorize your carpets
Generously sprinkle baking soda on carpet areas that might have pet or other odors. Leave the baking soda down as long as possible, preferably overnight. The next day, simply vacuum the baking soda off the carpet. Baking soda also works well for dirty tile and dingy grout. Put a little sparkle back in your floors by mixing ½ cup of baking soda in a bucket of water, mop the tile floor.
Un-clog drains
Baking soda is a safe and easy way to blast through buildup in clogged drains. Mix ½ cup with two cups of vinegar and pour the mixture down the drain. Let it set for a few minutes and then rinse the drain with boiling water.
Clean the bathroom
To remove stubborn stains from counter tops and other surfaces, mix baking soda and water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stain, let it stand, then scrub or wipe the surface clean. Hairbrushes and combs can also be effectively cleaned in a baking soda solution.
Oven cleaner
Make a paste of ½ cup baking soda and water. Wear gloves as you spread the paste over the interior of the oven. Apply a generous coating to dirtier areas. Let the baking soda sit overnight. After 12 hours, remove the paste with a damp cloth and wipe out the oven.
Remove dishwasher mold and mildew
Dissolve a few tablespoons of baking soda into a cup of water. Pour the mixture in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a cycle. Repeat this monthly to prevent the spread of mold and mildew.
