Get that sparkle back
Cleaning light fixtures is an extremely important part of your spring cleaning project. Think back to the first time that you saw your home. I can assure you that the light fixtures and chandeliers were part of the allure and beauty of every room. It’s not just about opulence; light fixtures can add personality and pizzazz to common areas, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Once you have the right fixtures, the only problem is that they get dirty over time, making them look grungy and bug laden. You do not have to clean your chandeliers and fixture frequently, but it should definitely be a focus during spring cleaning.
Get the ladder out
The first step before removing and cleaning light fixtures is to place a drop cloth on the floor underneath the light fixture because tons of dust and bugs will fall in the process. Be sure to use a ladder that broad based and stable. Center the ladder just to the left or right of the fixture so that you will have room to move around a bit while you are cleaning or taking the fixture down. You can stand on solid tables or counters to clean light fixtures that are situated over kitchen islands and counters, provided they are sturdy enough. Before you start cleaning, look at how each fixture is constructed and determine if you can remove parts, or if you need to take down the entire structure. If you can detach the globes and parts, it is safest to bring them down to a surface where you stand on the floor and clean them.
Cleaning the fixtures
For most glass and plastic fixtures, use a mild detergent in water and a soft rag. Clean inside and outside of the removable pieces and rinse them thoroughly before allowing them to dry. To clean the rest of the fixture, you can either detach it from the ceiling, or you can stand on the ladder and clean it where it hangs. Dust hanging fixture as thoroughly as possible, including swag electrical cords. Use a Microsoft towel or duster to clean ornate areas on chandeliers, taking care to wipe down the light bulbs. While you have the ladder out, check to make sure that all the light bulbs are working before you re-attach any globes or covers. After everything is dry, put the fixture back together and give it a final once-over. When you are done, all your light fixtures will look as good as new.
