Seasonal house cleaning your fireplace glass
Seasonal house cleaning demands our attention for so many areas in our home. As the weather turns cooler and then frigid, a wood-burning fireplace becomes a great luxury. In fact, it can be just as beautiful as it is functional. Wood burning fireplaces or wood stoves with glass doors, requires regular maintenance and cleaning. Admittedly, during the end of winter, we are less conscientious about keeping the glass clean because we use it less and less. However, with the holiday season just around the corner, you probably are expecting friends and family over, and you will want your fireplace to be a centerpiece for entertainment. To keep your fireplace looking new, regularly cleaning the glass doors is essential.
Regular cleaning
The most common problem for glass fireplace doors is the buildup of smoke and soot. The first step in cleaning your glass door(s) is to remove the doors from your fireplace and lay flat on a drop cloth. If the weather permits, you may want to do this outside because cleaning soot and ash can get quite messy. Before you resort to expensive cleaners, consider cleaning your doors with a damp paper towel or newspaper and leftover ashes. Use a circular motion to wipe the glass. This will loosen the baked-on soot. Repeat the process as much as necessary until the soot is lifted. Once the soot has been removed, clean off the glass with a glass cleaner and paper towels. Be careful not to leave streaks and the glass will appear as good as new.
Green cleaning
I there are no ashes available, use a vinegar and ammonia solution. Combine 1 part vinegar, 3 parts warm water, and 1/3 tablespoon of ammonia in a one-quart spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the glass and let sit for around 30 seconds. Use a clean cotton cloth to scrub the glass in a circular motion until soot is loosened. Repeat the process, as many times as is necessary until glass is clean. If you prefer, you can use a commercial cleaner that is designed specifically for fireplace glass. Regardless of your method or materials, regular cleaning of your fireplace glass doors will ensure minimal scrubbing for subsequent cleanings. For stubborn areas, you may need to use a spackling knife or razor blade to scrape off old layers of soot. You may want to leave the cleaning to professional housecleaning services.
