Organizing the garage
Just as the winter season leads to holiday bazaars, spring cleaning leads to garage sales. As the year goes by and we float from one season to the next, we accumulate all of the trappings that come with that season; everything from summer swimming equipment to Christmas decorations. In other words, beyond a place to park the car(s), the garage is pretty much like a glorified shed. What started out as a completely functional space gets filled with knickknacks that are accumulated and stored without rhyme or reason. Remember… spring cleaning is organizing, and when your possessions are in the proper place, the garage becomes a model of organization.
Clear out the garage
Everything must be removed from the garage, right down to the last nail. This is the only way that you can separate the trash from the treasures. Sort the items into designated areas in or around your house. For example you can place:
- Place junk in the driveway for eventual removal
- Place all tools on the patio or lanai
- Set goods that you intend to donate in the backyard
Make a mental note of what is going where and if you need hardware or organizing fixtures in order to save space when you return items to the garage.
Clean the garage
After all the contents of your garage have been removed, sweep or vacuum the floor. Give your garage the same thoroughness you would use when sweeping or vacuuming indoors. When you are done there should not be any dust bunnies, cobwebs, dead insects, or paper scraps anywhere. You might also consider power washing the garage floor with a mild detergent or degreaser. Start at the back and spray the dirt and debris out towards the driveway. You will probably need to follow up with an industrial squeegee or with a broom, to remove any standing water and to help to speed up the drying process.
Return items to the garage
Once the floor is clean and dry, now is the time to organize and return only those things that truly need to be stored in the garage. This will require a lot of discipline on your behalf. It is important to remain steadfast in your effort to keep the good stuff and to assign useful items a proper spot. Touch each item with the intent to either keep or give it away or send it to the dump. This will require you to constantly evaluate how often you will need each item, and dispense it as is appropriate. For some it may seem distressing, but for many, cleaning out the garage is a very therapeutic undertaking. Try not to get distracted by items that you have not used in years, stay on schedule and be prepared for next weekend’s garage sale.
