Spring cleaning a kitchen
This is the third in our series of spring cleaning articles. The concept of spring cleaning may be familiar to you, but you might be wondering, “Where do I start?” We are offering tips and suggestions that will help you clear out the dirt of winter and get ready for a fresh start in summer without getting overwhelmed. The one thing you must also remember when it comes to spring cleaning is that you probably are not going to get all of your spring cleaning done in one weekend. As we suggested in earlier articles, it will be far less overwhelming if you tackle your spring cleaning one room at a time.
The first steps for spring cleaning the kitchen are to:
- remove everything off the counters
- empty the cabinet and pantry shelves
- clear out the refrigerator and freezer
Clean the refrigerator
When you are spring cleaning the kitchen, it is a good time to inspect all of your major appliances for wear and tear. Pull the refrigerator out so that you can clean the floor underneath it. If you cannot move your fridge, use a vacuum wand that has clog proof suction slots. If you can reach the refrigerator coils, clean them along with the drain pan. This is also a good time to replace your water filter. Defrost the freezer and clean it out. Pull out all of your food, and start scrubbing down those shelves.
Cleaning the stove
Start by removing food materials that have accumulated in the bottom of your oven before cleaning the oven racks. Once your oven sparkles to your satisfaction, place an oven liner on the bottom to keep it clean until your next thorough cleaning. To clean the top of your stovetop, use a mild detergent and a non scratch scrubber for really tough baked-on messes. Remove your exhaust vents and clean them thoroughly.
The rest of the kitchen
To clean and sharpen your garbage disposal, run baking soda then ice cubes through it as it runs. Then, run through a lemon or lime to freshen it up. Wash down the ceiling, walls, windows, and light fixtures. Mop your floors with a multi-purpose steam cleaner to power away grease, dirt, and more. If you have tile counters, floors, or back splash; revive your dingy grout lines with a grout cleaner that dries rapidly and leaves a uniform grout line.
